“Over 20 years as an international practitioner and leader in high performance sport”

After finishing my career as a professional athlete, I have spent over 20 years as an international practitioner and leader in high performance sport. I am fortunate to be a highly sought-after presenter and performance consultant as I conduct my day to day role working in the AFL. I have the unique experience of performing strength & conditioning and sport science leadership roles across multiple professional sports and with multiple national sporting institutes across the globe. My unique experience has seen me providing services across the whole development pathway with many years dedicated to preparing both talented youth athletes and Olympic medallists, world champions and world record holders alike.

I have been lucky to work closely and collaborate for many years with world leading coaches and practitioners, hailing from all corners of the world. I have also uniquely spent many years in various contracted technical coaching roles, working my way up from an Assistant Rugby Union Coach, to a Head Coach and eventually to a Director of Rugby. This experience, from an overarching technical-tactical standpoint, has allowed me to more effectively prioritise player and athlete development with the primary goal to excel at their sport.

Over the years I have been deeply imbedded in the daily training environment and operations of a vast array of elite sports (Track Cycling, Athletics, Swimming, Sprint Canoe-Kayak, Waterpolo, Modern Pentathlon, Rugby Union, Australian Rules Football, Soccer and Rugby Sevens). I have additionally provided network-based support to many other sports (Trampoline, Squash, Netball, Basketball, Rowing, BMX cycling, Triathlon, SBX, Hockey and Long Distance Running). I draw from this experience in the extensive range of training trends & traditions, periodised preparation models and innate systems, processes and cultures I have been exposed to and heavily influenced by. I have learnt and developed in environments where there is “no hiding” as a performance coach; classic stopwatch-based sports where pure physical qualities, precise technical execution and accurately planned periodisation often determine winning or losing.

I incorporate this knowledge and experience in preparing team sports players in their non-linear and unpredictable world; finely balancing the development of physical qualities and tactical-technical prowess in order to dominate their opponents and play their role for the team consistently over a season and in multiple seasons to follow. I am a former undergraduate and postgraduate sport science lecturer and I am currently completing my PhD in a novel form of power training whilst I also publish scientific research on the side. I balance my academic pursuits and scientific knowledge with being a “pure” coach at heart, allowing my intuition and experience to guide me in making performance decisions with a solid foundation of scientific principles underpinning these decisions.
